Kathy’s legal journey began in 2010 after graduating from California Western School of Law, where she discovered her passion for family law through hands-on advocacy at the Madge Bradley Domestic Violence Clinic. She began her practice at the largest family law firm in North San Diego County, quickly distinguishing herself through her sharp legal analysis, calm courtroom presence, and ability to handle high-conflict matters with both firmness and grace. Recognizing a need for a more client-centered and holistic approach to family law, she later joined a boutique firm to lead its family law division before founding Minella Law Group.

Minella Law Group was born out of Kathy’s belief that every client deserves a personalized strategy, compassionate counsel, and tireless advocacy—no matter how complex the case. The firm now exclusively handles family law matters, including:

  • High-asset divorce and complex property division
  • Business and professional practice valuations
  • Child custody and parenting plans
  • Spousal and child support
  • Domestic violence and restraining orders
  • Mediation and collaborative divorce
  • Adoption, surrogacy, and family formation
  • Military family law
  • Estate planning and child welfare advocacy

Kathy has successfully handled thousands of cases, ranging from straightforward agreements to fiercely contested trials. Her practice is especially known for navigating high-net-worth divorces, where discretion, financial sophistication, and strategic foresight are paramount. She works closely with financial experts, forensic accountants, and business evaluators to ensure her clients’ wealth and interests are protected—without unnecessary conflict or exposure.

In 2016, Kathy became a Board-Certified Family Law Specialist by the State Bar of California Board of Legal Specialization—an elite designation earned by less than 1% of family law attorneys statewide. She is committed to continuing education, completing hundreds of hours of training in mediation, domestic violence, child custody evaluations, trauma-informed lawyering, and collaborative dispute resolution.

Kathy is also appointed by the San Diego Superior Court as Minor’s Counsel, serving as a voice for children in high-conflict custody cases. In this critical role, she advocates for children’s safety and well-being, often helping the court make difficult decisions in cases where families are in crisis. This experience gives her deep insight into the emotional dynamics of custody disputes and informs her approach to protecting children in all family law matters.

A Holistic, Solutions-Oriented Approach

Kathy believes that not all families need to fight to resolve their legal issues. Many benefit from respectful negotiation and structured problem-solving. As a trained mediator and collaborative law advocate, she helps clients reach efficient, private, and durable agreements—particularly valuable to professionals, business owners, and parents seeking to shield their children and reputations from litigation.

While Kathy is a formidable trial attorney when needed, she is also a trusted guide for clients who wish to take a more peaceful and dignified approach to divorce or custody. Her dual capability—as both a skilled litigator and a peacemaker—makes her especially effective in tailoring the right strategy to each client’s goals.

She is also a passionate advocate for animal rescue and has welcomed many rescue dogs into her home over the years.
