Our San Diego adoption attorneys can assist with independent adoptions
An independent adoption is one in which an agency is not involved and the birth parent(s) and the adoptive parents have a private arrangement for adoption. Typically, the birth parents work directly with the prospective adoption parents to make arrangements for placement. In some instances the parties might be friends or relatives, the placement is made due to the relationship or knowledge of the prospective adopting parents.
Our San Diego adoption attorneys represent adoptive parents who wish to formalize their placement. As with any legal action, complications may arise in your efforts to unify your family through adoption. We are committed to assisting you and your family in developing options and clear expectations of the steps involved in the adoption process.
The process: In California, the assistance of an Adoption Service Provider (ASP) is used to advise the birth parent(s) of their rights under the law. The ASP will work with the birth parent(s) to give guidance and support in signing consent forms. The adoptive parents will work with an attorney to hep facilitate the adoption process through the courts.
The adoption process will begin with the birth parent(s) consenting to the adoption and the child being placed in the adoptive parents home. The attorney will then file the adoption request with the County of San Diego. All parties will work with the Social Worker assigned to complete the investigation and appear at any court appearance necessary to finalize the adoption.
